Plug away, Drew. And I pretty much agree on all points. "self-contained" is also a "Calebesque" characteristic.

There's nothing wrong with ongoing stories. The problem I have with the majority of ongoing titles is that they continue to be produced even when they are at a low point, creatively (story/art wise). They don't conceed that maybe it would be better to stop publishing the book and wait until a great story comes along.

I like what Mignola does with his Hellboy characters. The stories are told when they are ready to be told. He doesn't just make monthly comics because they will sell.

That's certainly the plan with ArchEnemies as well.

It's a fine strategy, though not always practical from a market standpoint. Long running TV shows like ER have been good and bad at various points in their run. (I guess.) But if ER ever gets cancelled, it's done.

Most shows don't have the "luxury" of the BBC's Doctor Who which was able to take 15 years off and come back better than ever.

The new column is up.

Read it or I shall have you fed to kindergarteners hopped up on holiday sugar cookies.

Good stuff. I met DeFilippis & Weir at Comicon this year. They struck me as smart interesting people then and the interview certainly bares that out.

A new Tuesday means a new column. This week I interview Ande Parks on writing the historical comic.
