If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down, but the staying down.
A while back I asked people what I could do to get involved in the site again. A column is good, but we already have several great columns, and I wanted something new and fresh to get people coming back to the site.
Here's my idea.
"Fan Scrypts" or possibly "ScryptFics"
(note the trendy synergetic spelling)
The idea is to host an ongoing series of all your favorite comics (Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, etc) in a series of fanfic stories exclusive to Scryptic Studios.
They would not be endorsed by the publishers, they would not be bound by it's continuity, and they would not have art - only stories.
So you could come here each week and read the SCRYPTIC SUPERMAN (or whomever you'd like), which would start from the very beginning, bound by no continuity rules and free for us to develop independently of the publisher.
Best of all, these are the world's most popular and recognizable characters, written by YOU. This would be a great way to get more people to read your work, become familiar with your name (if we can promote it well), and even show the REAL publishers of these books what you can do on these characters - maybe earning you some face time with an editor.
Of course, all of this would require an editor to keep things in line ... and that would be me.
Also, there are potential legal problems here. But the way I see it, it's no worse or different than sites that post fan art of characters and comics.
It's a fan-based creation, explicitly stating it's independence from the publisher, and it is being offered by us for free.
This is just a rough idea at the moment, but I wanted to get some feedback on it's potential.
Could we actually host a series of ongoing fanfic stories as an alternative to the published books?
All those interested, say AYE!

Hey Ryan, it's certainly a unique idea and one I would think of contributing to. Are you suggesting the stories be written in full comic script format or as prose?
Also, how often would you be wanting the stories to be updated?
Lastly, I assume you would open this to non DC/ Marvel characters/ titles too?

I don't know how often they'd have to be updated. Ideally at least every week or two.
I would think prose would be best, but maybe an occasional script format also.
And certainly, it wouldn't have to be only Marvel/DC. Anything goes, I guess.
But while I, as the editor, would not adhere them to published continuity, I would ask that they remain somewhat recognizable. Like no new characters, and no major changes (ie: killing Lois Lane).
