recommended books on writing

For a guy with an English degree, I have precious little books on writing to show for it.

Can you guys recommend some good books on the theory and craft of writing? Plot, structure, characterization, all that good stuff.

I feel a craving in my soul for just writing theory, as opposed to writing for comics, these days.

Viki King's How to Write a Movie in 21 Days is full of all sorts of good practical writing wisdom that applies to much more than movies. Probably my favorite book on writing.

David Ball's Backward & Forwards is intended as a book about how to read a play (yeah, I know), but ends up being a great technical manual on how to write.

Depending on your faith, Madeline L'Engle's Walking on Water is also a fantastic read.

I can't recommend Aristotle's Poetics enough, for all I've gotten from it. I have a really good edition from Hill and Wang; affordable and readable. He touches on all that you're looking for- action, plot, character, etc.
I'd be interested to hear what you think, if you do read it.

Story - Robert McKee. I find it to be a hard read and I can only take it in about 20 minutes chunks, but it is story building gold.
